The members of the Broxbourne Cruising Clubsaw the results of their labours totally destroyed by fire last week after an arson attack by some young persons seen fleeing from the area by local fishermen.

In 2002 the Club was forced to stand by and watch as their parent body the Broxbourne Rowing Club sold off another third of their mooring land leaving only about seven moorings. Most of the members were dispersed around whatever local moorings could be found, although some were accommodated by other clubs on the river.

Enough was enough and the Club made the commitment to seek and set up it’s own independent premises, and through the good offices of Lafarge Aggregates got the offer of an affordable, (just about), local field not far downriver.

It took over five years of negotiation to overcome Planning officialdom and uninformed, misinformed and even some obviously malicious objections, but eventually the way was cleared and the task of creating a Cruising Club from a rough pasture was commenced. The moorings had to be ecologically acceptable. We could achieve that. But to convert the sectional building we had bought into an environmentally acceptable Clubhouse was to say the least, labour intensive. Some of the members have not had a weekend at home for months. The new roof was on, all the internal construction completed and yes that’s the rest of the exterior cladding damaged you can see in the picture, spread out for dousing. The rest of the building was burned to the ground

We can and will rebuild, but first:

Does anyone have a sectional building they don’t want?

AND A TRACTOR WITH A BACK ACTOR AND A DUMPER

                     Or knows somebody who does?

We managed excellent national press coverage at this protest.
