"Notwithstanding the very recent
publication of the sobering MAIB report into the fire and fatality aboard ‘Lindy
Lou’ earlier this year (see separate link below) the Boat Safety Scheme has
already recognised the risk issue of solid fuel stoves as significant. Owners of boats with stoves can help prevent the prediction of incidents during the forthcoming Winter coming
true by carrying out some simple checks and adopting a safer way to use
them. BSS has worked with the Solid Fuel Association to update advice to boat
owners. This advice includes: -
-
checking the stove and
flue for gaps or cracks which could leak flue gases,
-
ensuring that flues and
chimneys are unobstructed,
-
checking that flue
terminals have not been crushed or damaged,
-
checking that
ventilation has not become blocked,
-
using the right fuel
and keeping it dry; as well as,
-
sorting out risky
faults straight away,
-
keeping soft
furnishings or laundry items away the stove or flue; and,
-
not leaving the stove
door open or leaving the appliance running unattended for hours on end
without having complete confidence about how the stove will
behave.
The safety advice will
also appear in some of the waterway magazines in the next few days or so and is
available on the BSS website from a link on the recently introduced ‘fire advice
portal’. [Visit

"The Marine Investigation Branch has today released the final report on the
fire that occurred on the narrowboat Lindy Lou that resulted in a fatality. The
report acknowledges that AWCC now recommends the fitting of smoke alarms.
The full report can be accessed by clicking on this link:
The Boat Safety Scheme has asked if any AWCC club(s) would like to
participate in a manufacturer's trial of smoke alarms fitted to their boats.
Would any club like to get involved? There would no charge but it would
involve some reporting back to BSS and the manufacturer. please contact Malcolm
Wood: communications@awcc.org.uk"
